Pete’s Dalek – Skirt

Back to Pete’s Dalek.
Just like the shoulders, the skirt is a plywood frame with tops and bottoms onto which a skin of thin MDF is attached. Here is the basic frame.
to attach the MDF panels to the frame, I applied good ol’ Liquid Nails and then used panel pins to pin the sections down. I later removed the pins and filled the tiny holes with filler to get a smooth finish.
Once I’d trimmed the top and bottoms of the panels, I coated them with high build wood primer and sanded back. Here you can see the inverted skirt (ooohh-errr again…) with a hole cut into the base to allow my feet to propel me around when I’m out on the town exterminating.
Here is the painted skirt sitting on top of the base. All the parts were painted at a local auto body shop and they did a great job!The base is 18mm MDF with castor wheels on it. They dont roll particularly well – should have made them bigger
After all the time and hassle of painting and finishing the hemispheres I finally got to put them on. This Dalek really does have balls – 56 of them.
No self-respecting Dalek builder ever gets past this phase without sitting in the skirt, attaching some kind of light to their forehead and pretending to be Davros. It just has to be done.
